"Blackle.com - Saving energy one search at a time".

My friend David (thanks, Omar!) mentioned this website to me last night called Blackle. Blackle, which is powered by Google, supposedly:

"Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002."

My friend Robert tends to disagree, saying:

"This is actually a bit inaccurate. On LCD screens the same amount of
light is emitted always for black or white colors. The crystals have
to rearrange to block out the light, so the hardest color to form is
black, which arguably can take more energy on an LCD screen. LCD
screens are in all laptops and most modern flat panel monitors are
LCDs as well. On CRT(old big monitors) and plasma screens, however,
black will take less energy to generate. The same will probably be
true of OLEDs when they come out."

I'm not sure who's right or wrong, but I suppose every little bit of energy-saving helps! Perhaps it's also just a marketing scheme to promote a new Google product, but anything technology-oriented is worth giving a try.
